...lyrics Garcia lent humanity with his frail tenor. "His voice was a picture of the American past," says singer-composer Elvis Costello. "You could call it sepia-tinted. It's like one of those great old Civil War pictures that is so sharp it shocks you how much detail it holds, yet at the same time it's not in color." As for Garcia's guitar playing, Costello says it "wasn't a question of virtuosity for its own sake, dazzling with millions of notes. It had a lovely tone and touch, and even when he played steel guitar...
...Eddie Harris, who transported Smith to interrogations during that period, testified that Smith said she was looking forward to going to the beach and learning how to dance the shag. Sandra Conradi, the forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsies on Michael and Alex, described death by drowning in excruciating detail. And while jurors were spared the autopsy photos, they did view videotaped re-enactments of Smith's Mazda rolling into John D. Long Lake. For despite the toil of hundreds of artisans, Waterworld is a series of hints and promises, weird turns and blind alleys...
...pleased that critic Richard Corliss noted the attention to detail by the makers of Apollo 13 [CINEMA, July 3], but there were some errors in the review. The names given to the command and lunar modules of Apollo 13, Odyssey and Aquarius, were not, as the article implied, derived from the entertainment-industry products 2001: A Space Odyssey and Hair. Astronaut Jim Lovell's book clearly states the derivation of the names: Odyssey because Lovell "plain liked the ring of the word," and Aquarius from Egyptian mythology. Otherwise, the review was well written, and should bring throngs to movie theaters...
