Five planes began the mission from California's Castle Air Force Base; one, after a mechanical failure, dropped out in Labrador, and another landed by prearrangement in England. Every detail had been attended to: worldwide communications and weather services, precisely timed geographical check points, State Department clearance, stand-by refueling planes. For the flyers themselves, there was steak (cut into bite-size pieces), canned chicken, ice-cold milk, fruit juice, soup, freshly baked cakes, candy bars. At four or five strategic places along the route (the exact number is secret), the jet-age birds dropped down from their...
...Second Chances. As the Seabees worked, a bulky figure in mohair-lined parka, Byrd Cloth coveralls and heavy boots moved among them, carefully, almost instinctively checking every construction detail. For no man knows better than Paul Allman Siple that the antarctic tolerates few mistakes, permits even fewer second chances. At 48, Paul Siple (rhymes with disciple) has spent more time on the continent than any other person. He came there first as an eager, wide-eyed Sea Scout with the Byrd expedition of 1928-30; when he leaves it for the sixth time, in February 1958, some 5½ years...
...Only one detail was amiss: the show's plot was obvious. From the start it was clear that John George Diefenbaker, 61, of Prince Albert, Sask. would be elected leader of Canada's major opposition party. Ever since George Drew resigned because of ill health. Diefenbaker had been the front runner to replace him (TIME, Oct. 1). Diefenbaker did not campaign for the job and refused to ask a single delegate to vote for him. But support piled up steadily and weeks before the convention opened, there was little doubt that Lawyer Diefenbaker would win on the first...
...been consummated because Baby Doll, who is 19. does not yet consider herself, as she daintily phrases it, "ready for marriage." Frustrated in both business and pleasure, Archie goes berserk one night and burns down the syndicate gin. The rest of the picture describes, with a degree of Priapean detail that might well have embarrassed Boccaccio, how the syndicate's manager (Eli Wallach) gets his revenge; he not only seduces Baby Doll, but persuades her to give him evidence that it was Archie who burned down...
...longest story is the funniest and also the best. Ivan C. Karp's A Medicine Called Happiness tells part of the history of Hayyem Soloveichik, who is conspired against by his purposes and his father. The humor of the story comes both from Karp's odd eye for detail and from the picture of Hayyem's father, "the scholar," which Hyyam's oblique remarks create. When in the synagogue he is nudging his father to ask for money, he thinks, "I was faced with an iron will pretending to be religious ecstasy." The story is so readable because...
