...Cassville, Missouri. One, a man named Tim, mostly stayed in the car, but he came up to the office door once, enough for Maloney to notice the way he smiled. There was the glint of a tooth filling on the right side at the back of his mouth--a detail that matches McVeigh's dental records, FBI sources say. The second visitor in Cassville was apparently Nichols, who used his own name but took little part in the conversations. It was the third man who did almost all the talking. His name was Robert Jacques, pronounced Jacks. "I just...

...intervening two decades, astronomical hardware has improved markedly, giving scientists the chance to study comets in unprecedented detail. They want to know precisely what these bodies are made of, since comets are believed to be the only objects that have remained unaltered since the solar system was born, 4.5 billion years ago. The planets and the asteroids have been heated and cooled, smashed apart and re-formed, but the comets, lingering on the solar system's periphery, have stayed relatively pristine...

The bomb, McVeigh allegedly said, was built with 5,400 lbs. of ammonium nitrate fertilizer--600 lbs. more than the government estimate--mixed with high-grade racing fuel. Total cost: $540 for the fertilizer, $3,000 for the fuel. The summer before the bombing, McVeigh was noted as saying he had an affair with the wife of Terry Nichols, the former Army buddy who would become his accused co-conspirator. The paper did not indicate whether Nichols found out. Still...

That strange and sometimes brilliant testament aside, Sam Tanenhaus has now written the best biography that Chambers is likely to receive, Whittaker Chambers (Random House; 638 pages; $35). Tanenhaus' account, essentially sympathetic, is patient, admirably balanced and fascinating in its rich detail. On the great litmus question of postwar politics--which of them was telling the truth?--Tanenhaus is clear. Walking again through all the familiar elements of the case (the Woodstock typewriter, the Bokhara rug, the prothonotary warbler, the famous Pumpkin Papers), Tanenhaus shows, if anyone still doubts it, that Alger Hiss was lying...
