...Cincinnati, where a "continuous program to detect health hazards and sanitary defects . . . does not exist," and where infectious hepatitis, traced to the city's water supply, broke out in a new federal housing project...
Since World War II, there has been an intensive effort to produce better infra-red detectors for the military. In Viet Nam, for instance, such devices have often been used to detect Communist troops in even the most densely foliated jungle. Other applications include heat-seeking missiles and spy-in-the-sky satellites. One of the leaders in the field, the Barnes Engineering Co. of Stamford, Conn., has developed detectors that can "see" the dark part of a crescent moon from a quarter-million miles away...
...promising use of thermography is in medicine. By spotting unusual temperature changes on the skin, doctors have been able to locate tumors, detect symptoms foreshadowing strokes, explore the extent of arthritic inflammation, gauge the severity of burns. If human skin is too warm, it may well mean increased metabolic activity and blood temperature underneath it, one of the signs of a malignancy. Cold skin may indicate dead tissue, as in severe burns, or reduced blood circulation, a clue to circulatory blockages...
...Beirut's busy international airport, security measures include dogs trained to sniff hashish and electronic devices designed to detect metallic objects. One morning last week the electronic eyes were not working as well as the canine noses, and six young Arab passengers, all students at American University of Beirut, sauntered on to Olympic Airways' Athens-bound Flight 255 toting five pistols, two hand grenades and a submachine...
There is an electronic counter-countermeasure for jamming. Radio frequencies emitted by the ground-base guidance radar can be changed quickly so that the radar operator can continue to track the target aircraft on his scope in spite of the "noise." Of course, sensors in the ECM pod instantly detect this switch in hostile radar frequency and warn the pilot, who can then resume jamming by a frequency shift...
