...Stairs to the Roof” comes into it’s own in the last twenty minutes. The expertly choreographed ensemble uses elements of pantomime, slow motion, and Vaudevillian antics to highlight the strengths of Williams’ story. Although the ending of the play is shamelessly deus ex machina, it is done in a way that is genuinely surprising even in the context of an already unconventional production...

...success of a show like “The Sorcerer,” with a fundamentally weak plot only resolved by a deus ex machina, depends largely on its soloists, whom stage director Davida Fernandez-Barkan ’11 manages effectively. The role of Alexis is well handled by Nelson (in last Saturday’s matinee performance). His strong tenor and zestful portrayal of his foppish, affected character provides many of the performance’s most rewarding moments. In particular, his over-the-top exchanges with his father, played with great aplomb by Yashinsky, are delightful...

...Miss March” has its funny moments, most of the humor is trite and stale. The film banks too heavily on the shock value of giving screen time to the corporeal taboo, such as a pair of testicles sans penis. The film’s deus ex machina, which involves a lustful lesbian make-out session, also strikes out. Even more cringe-worthy is the film’s use of medical conditions like incontinence and epilepsy...

...black-tie suppers of foie gras and lobster. Travel only by limousine, yacht and helicopter. As you conduct this princely progress, adorn your speech - as the characters are all wont to do, even if nobody in Hong Kong ever does - with copious references to "joss" (luck, from the Portuguese deus, or "god"), face (and the importance of), high finance and underworld figures with piratical names (Four-Finger Wu, Smallpox Kin). Brosnan is also liable to utter startling ejaculations that are supposed to be Cantonese. Naturally, nobody understands his blather, but in its imperious cadence and dauntless delivery you can hear...

...inevitability of this year’s disappointment is prefigured by an enormous body of pep-rally (non-)history. Unlucky weather, New England’s perennial deus ex machina, has played a frequent role. In 1994, a much-ballyhooed bonfire in the MAC quad was rained upon, and went unattended by many of its organizers. Last year, the rally was driven inside the Queen’s Head Pub by rain, where it unfurled as an apparent mixed bag. In 2006, Fun Czar emeritus John T. Drake ’06 cancelled the event—again, because...
