...scarf turns into a bird, the clock magically obeys his hands, Harlequin and Columbine wind-up dolls (Pollyana Ribeiro and Gabriel Otevrel) dance beautifully and humorously, and most importantly, the godfather presents Clara with a much desired nutcracker. The inclusion of a new and wonderfully executed pas de deux between Clara (Brittany Braga) and Dr. Drosselmeyer, in which Clara tries to get the nutcracker out of the gift-giver's hands, heightens the drama of desire central to the story and offers a new and unusual combination for a pas de deux between an older man and a young girl...

...Sugar Plum Fairy's pirouettes and her leaps in plie on point all allowed Jennifer Gelfand to look delicate and effortless while demonstrating her internationally recognized mastery of technique. While strong on her own Gelfand proved to have even more range in her movement in a pas de deux with her talented partner Paul Thrussell (dancing as the Cavalier). A small and subtle suspension of time prior to Thrussell's lifts of Gelfand increased the energy of the duet, resulting in a final climax to the performance...

White imbues even the most frequently told stories with a novel charm. His recreation of the De Beauvoir-Sartre headquarters at the Cafe Deux Magots is sardonic and affectionate, and the deliciously lengthy and opinionated portrait of Cocteau could stand on its own as a study of a "genius who never wrote a bad line or a good book...

Sappington's Slide is savvy show biz; maybe Jerome Robbins should take a bow too. In the finale, Pucci, who was an engaging clown with the Pilobolus troupe during the '80s, lightens things up with cheerful, back-lit aerobics. In a pas de deux that manages to be both steamy and droll, he may be offering an opinion on pointe work, particularly when he has the ballerina (Jodie Gates) aim her toe shoe into her prostrate partner's mouth...

...Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, and Puss `n' Boots and the White Cat from other fairy tales in a decision that seems out of context, employed for the sole purpose of filling out Tchaikovsky's score. A highlight of the final act is the beautiful pas de deux between a Blue Bird, danced by Paul Thrussel, and his enchanted princess (Adriana Suarez). In this pas de deux, the lifts and leaps break boundaries in choreography noticeably lacking in the rest of the performance. The following pas de deux between the Prince and Princess, while technically excellent and performed...
