More clues about what could be going on come from Olsen's research into the genetics of cartilage. For the past 10 years, he and his colleagues have been studying a group of families that develop advanced cases of osteoarthritis unusually early, in their 40s and 50s. So far, Olsen's group has identified at least three genetic variations that make the cartilage of these patients more susceptible to overloading. Other scientists have found at least a dozen cartilage-disrupting enzymes that appear to be overactive in osteoarthritis...
...forms, including peanut butter, reduce the risk of adult-onset diabetes. After analyzing the munching habits of more than 83,000 nurses for up to 16 years, researchers found that women who consumed 5 oz. of nuts each week (about five handfuls) were 30% less likely to develop diabetes than women who rarely touched them. Shanghai also aims to develop the world's tallest building by 2007, and last week, the city was reportedly close to landing a deal for a Universal Studios theme park. But Beijingers can still sneer at Shanghai's latest coup. The Expo ain't the Olympics. The 2000 Expo in Hanover lost $1 billion...
