This is the show from hell, and we mean it in a good way. On his 21st birthday, slacker Sam (Bret Harrison) learns that his parents sold his soul to the Devil (Ray Wise). Now Satan has come to collect, drafting him to capture fugitives from Hades--a dirty job but one that gives Sam a purpose in life for the first time. A kind of male Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Reaper is the funniest network pilot of the season and a devil of a good time...

...great Pinot may taste heavenly, but it's a devil of a job to get it into your glass. Birds love the sugar-laden grapes (hence the surreal sight in early fall in Central Otago of what appear to be snow-filled valleys, which are in fact a vast expanse of white nets). If the grapes aren't picked exactly as they reach maturity, the thin-skinned berries shrivel on the vines--which, because they thrive on steep slopes, demand that harvesting be done by hand. Yields are low--about 2 tons per acre (5 metric tons per hectare, which...

...bring down governments with their feet, they bring them down with their ballots - in every parliamentary election since 1978 and before 2007, the French voted out whichever party they had voted in the previous time. Add on top of this the nonstop pace of the ambitious Sarkozy and his devil-may-care attitude toward French media and social conventions (like vacationing in America or jogging in shorts), and all the conditions seem to be in place for a regime that will trip up, exhaust itself, or create too many enemies before it gets anything done...

...Name 10 American female celebrities with gray hair. Umm ... Meryl Streep. But only in character and only occasionally, such as in The Devil Wears Prada. O.K., how about Emmylou Harris and Jamie Lee Curtis ... and that woman on the Food Network, Paula Dean, and ... and ... O.K., but that's show business. Surely there are nationally famous gray-haired women in more workaday fields, in business and politics and the professions? Uhhh ... Barbara Bush? In fact, we have almost no high-profile, female, gray-haired role models...

Like the evangelist's message, the cover image was timeless. Many bloggers have opined about whether it was coincidence or conspiracy behind the "devil's horns" they saw on Graham's head, but the way I see it, the editors chose to superimpose the powerful image of America's pastor at prayer over the magazine's logo to reflect that the Good News he preaches is outside the confines of TIME--both the magazine and the dimension. That is consistent with veteran writers Gibbs' and Duffy's story, which focused on a spiritual rather than secular mission in which Graham...
