Close indeed. The Bible's account of the event that rests at the heart of Christian faith, they concluded, is a poetic rendering of a devout wish but certainly not an authentic record. Crossan, who is co-chairman of the seminar with Funk, argues it this way: since the Crucifixion was conducted by Roman soldiers, he reckons, Jesus' body was most likely left on the Cross or tossed into a shallow grave to be eaten by scavenger dogs, crows or other wild beasts. ...residence for the Antwerp Royal Orchestra. Yet Georgia is never far from his thoughts: one of his most recent works is called Trauerfarbenesland ("The Sorrow-Colored Land"). "I can't characterize my music as religious, although religious music is very close and dear to me," says Kancheli, a devout Orthodox Christian. One 35-year-old who has since left the group says that when he became a devout follower, he was required to surrender his passport to the group and donate all his cash and belongings. He also recounts working under near slave-labor conditions at a sect project on the southern island of Kyushu. "Their strategy is to wear you down and take control of your mind," he says. "They promise you heaven, but they make you live in hell...

...Angeles--is now the undisputed leader of the defense team. He was responsible for convincing Shapiro and Bailey to make up; he will be presenting opening arguments and making trial assignments; and he is the person O.J. calls every night from prison. Last Thursday morning Cochran, 57, a devout Baptist, even called his troops into a prayer meeting in a room at the L.A. County courthouse. ``It became very emotional,'' says Cochran of the session led by the Rev. Rosey Grier, the former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle who is Simpson's friend and spiritual adviser. Cochran then directed each...
