Personality: A devout Methodist from the middle class, he is exception to Tory pattern of leadership, which is Anglican, Etonian and upper class. He lives modestly in a Belgravia apartment with his young (27) wife, his former secretary whom he married in 1951, and three-year-old daughter; dresses immaculately in Savile Row suits, sports a Foreign Office bowler with aplomb, is supremely sure of himself...

...Australian, French and other comrades to protect Egypt and the Arab world and to set Ethiopia free. An obscure party employee in those days, [Khrushchev] was probably never allowed to know that Stalin did not even acknowledge Mr. Churchill's repeated warnings of the impending Nazi attack. A devout ignoramus today, he would be the last man to heed the thought that the allies' Thermopylaean resistance in the Balkans, which forced an infuriated Hitler to postpone invading Russia for over a month, quite possibly saved Moscow. Excuses may be made for childish ignorance and even for narrow racialist...

The Advocate's fragments of Professor Whitman's translation of The Alcestis, with their alliteration and charming metre, seem very well done. There is also another of Andre Gregory's hoaxes. This one is about a sea-walnut. John Ratte's cover is, as usual, architectural...

...government of Prime Minister Johannes Strydom, devout member of the Dutch Reformed Church, preaches apartheid in the name of Christianity, but South Africa's Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy have taken a firm stand against government policy. More than anyone else, one man symbolized this opposition. He went into the slums to comfort black Africans hounded by the police. He threatened to close down his mission school for Africans rather than let the government impose a second-class curriculum. He became apartheid's most formidable adversary. Last week the Rev. Trevor Huddleston, provincial of the Anglican Community...

...item definitely not exportable is The Punch Revue, a collection of dry skits and songs which should leave even the most devout Anglophile gasping for more vermouth. The fraction of the show I understood was very funny, and Miss Binnie Hale's impressions of other actresses broke through the language barrier. With filmy dress and yellow sausage wig, Miss Hale succeeds in making even Marlene a little ludicrous...
