...plot--about the pursuit of a Harvard professor (Tom Hanks) and a French policewoman (Audrey Tautou) by a devout, albino hit man (Paul Bettany) and rival gangs of learned loonies, all in search of Christ's Holy Grail--has some superficial bustle, but essentially it's a course in speculative religious and art history. Somebody talks, the others listen. Those lectures give most of the actors little to do. Ian McKellen, as a crotchety charmer, fares best, because he does most of the talking. Bettany, finding poignancy in murder and masochism, comes in second...

...President of Iran, but ultimate power in the theocratic state lies not with him but with Khamenei. Still, Ahmadinejad's nationalist statements have bolstered his popularity with many ordinary Iranians. Ahmadinejad's letter to Bush may have been less an invitation to talk than an attempt to appeal to devout Muslims around the world by mimicking the letters sent by the Prophet Muhammad to leaders during the 7th century, exhorting them to return...

...number of Christians misrepresented by the Christian right is many. There are evangelical Protestants who believe strongly that Christianity should not get too close to the corrupting allure of government power. There are lay Catholics who, while personally devout, are socially liberal on issues like contraception, gay rights, women's equality and a multi-faith society. They have no problem living next to an atheist or a gay couple or a single mother...

Because anyone is welcome to attend the events, meetings, trips, and join the e-mail list of this group, including non-Christians, one cannot assume that everyone in the group is a devout Christian. As conversion is a gradual process, it is possible that there are many students who are active in the group but are not 100% sure that they believe in all of the articles of the Christian faith. Such a person might aspire to one day lead the group, but should realize, because of the explicit lines in the constitution, that he or she cannot assume...

...ZARQAWI IS NO RELIGIOUS SCHOLAR. A high school dropout, he memorized the Koran while in prison and acquired his religious ideas from extremist preachers and thinkers in Afghanistan and Jordan. To devout Muslims, emulation of the Prophet is considered desirable, and most believers concentrate on Muhammad's well-documented attributes, like frugality, modesty, charity and respect for elders. But al-Zarqawi, like others who subscribe to extremist schools of Islam, takes emulation literally. Among the examples Bakr cites is al-Zarqawi's tendency, modeled on the Prophet's, to "do everything from right to left: he puts on his right...
