Strater had with him a modest little book which he allowed me to thumb through. The many photographs looked like shots of daring jitterbug steps, with one partner suspended in midair. Beneath each picture was a short paragraph of English prose and a diagram resembling an Arthur Murray dance step. I could not understand the corresponding Japanese...

...first exposures showed what the doctors had been looking for. At the hiatus, where the esophagus (gullet) passes through the muscular diaphragm from the chest cavity into the abdominal cavity (see diagram), the muscle was weak and part of the upper stomach had herniated or bulged through it. How the hernia started, they could not tell (it might have been there in milder form since birth), but there was no doubt that it was the cause of much of the Pope's recent gastritis, hiccuping and vomiting. The hernia held food like a pouch, instead of letting it pass...

...Franklin Park, N.J. when his first son was born on April 16, 1904. Clifford Jr., his brother and four sisters grew up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in a home that was not prosperous but was pleasant. The Rev. Case was not a formal man. When Clifford Jr. found a diagram for a sailboat on wheels, his father helped him build one in the attic. The sight of Pastor Case riding down the street with two or three of his children in the hybrid vehicle was, for a time, the talk of Poughkeepsie...

...conditions in an exploding bomb, they may react with one another in many different ways. They also react with the products, e.g., neutrons, given off by the fission detonator, and with materials in the casing of the bomb. As the temperature changes, their behavior changes too. So a diagram describing the behavior of a fusion bomb can give only a few of the possible ingredients and tell only a few of the ways in which they may react...

What happens when a charge of lithium-six deuteride is ignited is almost anyone's guess. A great many reactions are possible, and many must surely take place (see diagram). The main reaction is the combination of L16 with H², forming two atoms of helium (He4) and giving off a flood of energy. Since helium is the final product, the well-designed bomb should produce as much of it as possible, but side reactions are likely. Neutrons from the reacting plutonium are apt to hit lithium atoms, turning them into helium and tritium (H³). Tritium...
