...Having just read the interesting Essay on sex education in the U.S. [June 9], I cannot suppress an ironical snigger at the spectacle of a highly rational society indulging in such magical thinking as to suppose that, having drawn a diagram of a tiger on the blackboard, the teacher may safely invite children to stroke the nice "pussycat" roaming in the jungle. Sex is probably the most powerful, and certainly the most mysterious, of the instincts, and cannot be tamed by a textbook...

...pulled, a powerful spring drives a cocked plunger into a cylinder, compressing and heating the trapped air to about 2,000° F. Escaping into the firing chamber through a valve, a jet of heated air strikes and ignites the propellant, which pushes the missile through the barrel (see diagram). Because the heated air helps the propellant to oxidize completely, there are no unburned traces left to foul the barrel. V-L test rifles have been fired up to 50,000 times without cleaning or other maintenance...

...spleen removed, he might as well be rid of the flukes at the same time. They designed a system of tubes to pipe the blood from the vein entering the patient's liver, pumping it through a filter, and returning it to a vein in the leg (see diagram). In order to lure the flukes out of their customary lairs in the intestinal veins, they give patients a single injection of tartar emetic. The flukes, which find the emetic as unpleasant as most human beings do, come scurrying out into the main bloodstream, and are shunted through the tubes...

Electron microscopists have since photographed lysosomes, and Dr. de Duve, now at Rockefeller University, has figured out some of the ways they work (see diagram). In a typical case, a foreign particle (it may be a virus, a bacterium or a chemical) reaches the side of a cell and is sucked in, sealed off by a piece of the cell's own membrane. Standing by inside the cell is a lysosome, packed with enzymes. Lysosome and invader, now packaged in a phagosome, are drawn together and fuse. In the resulting sac, called a vacuole, the foreign substance is digested...

...impact of the shock wave on a 6½-ft. dia. 30-megaton warhead would be equivalent to the explosion of 2 or 3 Ibs. of TNT within the missile, which may be enough to set off some of the lens-shaped charges of conventional explosives inside (see diagram). These, in turn, would cause the remaining lens-shaped explosives to detonate. Because all of the conventional charges would not explode simultaneously, as they are designed to do, the resulting implosion would not be uniform enough to start a critical reaction in the core of the nuclear device; it would simply...
