...most gregarious gabber think twice before picking up the phone again. What if the record of all your personal calls--whom you're talking to, when and for how long--were being sold to the highest bidder, by none other than your very own telephone company? Every time you dial up your shrink for a quick calm-me-down, for instance, that history could be sold to a pharmaceutical firm ready to pitch you on the benefits of tranquilizers...
...DIAL IN STYLE Every year or two the designers at Denmark's Bang & Olufsen set new standards of cool for home electronics. This fall they hope to lure buyers with their new BeoCom 6000 cordless phone. The wedge-shaped handset (in blue, red, green or black) sits on a pyramid-shaped base and has a dialing wheel that makes it easy to scan and store numbers. Is it worth the $475 price? With each effortless motion came a whooshing sound as the vacuum pump he'd devised moved the brake or accelerator...
...antiabortion ads were a major (if tasteful) foray into hot-button advocacy, the Power for Living campaign is closer to pure tract evangelism. Viewers who dial the 800 number receive the 134-page booklet, which employs simple metaphors like a country road or a broken golf club in support of the classic invitation. "All you do is, by an act of your will, say, 'I want You, Jesus, to take over my life.'" Participants in an earlier Power drive in 1983 have claimed that several million people ordered the book...
