...brass-buttoned coats loaded with a fruit salad of stars, medals and epaulets (famed Costumer Karinska, who traditionally arrives, cavalrylike, just as Balanchine is about to burn, outdid herself by producing the outfits several hours before curtain time). All the dazzle did not glare from the costumes: Ballerina Diana Adams, in a blue, yellow and red drum majorette's rig, led a regiment of girls in high, prancing kicks to the tune of Rifle Regiment; Ringmaster Balanchine had 13 men of the ballet corps performing difficult, double in-the-air turns to Arranger Hershy Kay's combination...
...gracefully. As the music mocks itself-in a trumpet jeer or a pizzicato poke-the dancers mock the music with a hop, skip or bump. Most dramatic bits: Canadian-born Melissa Hayden's stunning solo variation and a languorous, sensual pas de deux exquisitely danced by Virginia-born Diana Adams and Arthur Mitchell, a talented Negro member of the company. The whole work takes less than 25 minutes, but it unmistakably shows Composer Stravinsky, 75, and Choreographer Balanchine, 53, at the top of their formidable form...

...Jeffries, who slinks about the stage in a tight gold dress as a wonderfully seductive Venus. In the role of Orpheus, Harvey White demonstrates the triple talents of violinist (good enough for light opera), singer (the same) and actor (a little too strained for comedy). Anne Wallace, as Diana, has a strong voice but it is difficult to understand her. And James Greene, who plays Styx, demonstrates a somewhat limited acting ability but nevertheless distinguished himself through his pleasant voice...
