...plays Aramis. "But they are older and wiser." GERARD DEPARDIEU is Porthos, JOHN MALKOVICH is Athos, and GABRIEL BYRNE is D'Artagnan, their friend and captain. The film by first-time director Randall Wallace (Oscar-winning screenwriter of Braveheart) is being shot in France and also stars LEONARDO DICAPRIO as the Sun King, Louis...
...coherent word in years. His sister Ruth (Gwen Verdon) is so devoted to soap operas that she dons a formal gown when her favorite characters wed. His daughter Lee (Meryl Streep), who smokes all the time, has no talent for raising kids. Just look at her son Hank (Leonardo DiCaprio), with his pathological fear of apologizing to people he's hurt. Fortunately, Lee's sister Bessie (Diane Keaton) is around. She has taken care of her dad for 20 years. But no good deed goes unpunished: Bessie has just heard she has leukemia...
...sitcom from hell, redeemed into a lesson of togetherness. Marvin's Room, the 1991 Scott McPherson play, filmed by Jerry Zaks, is an old-fashioned weepie of noble mien with many bright moments and a superb cast. An executive at another studio says he can't imagine attempting "a period movie for that kind of dough on the water with Jim." What Cameron promises to deliver, of course, is the Titanic as no one has seen it. The director of Aliens, both Terminators and The Abyss, Cameron has "vast cinematic appetites," as an agent puts it, consistently delivering...
...film, Cameron claims his Titanic is more a love story than an action picture--which may not soothe his backers' anxieties. Inspired by the romance and sweep of Doctor Zhivago, the director-screenwriter has devised a fictional liaison between first-class passenger Winslet and third-class cute guy DiCaprio. The director says he's fascinated by the notion that people who were supposed to be coddled and secure were facing imminent doom. "They thought they were safe in this big luxury hotel," he says. "In fact, they were in a steel object over 2 1/2 miles of water...
