...alas, to the quantum theories of Werner Heisenberg and others who showed how the wave-particle duality implies a randomness or uncertainty in nature and that particles are affected simply by observing them. This made Einstein uncomfortable. As he famously and frequently insisted, "God does not play dice." (Retorted his friendly rival Niels Bohr: "Einstein, stop telling God what to do.") He spent his later years in a failed quest for a unified theory that would explain what appeared to be random or uncertain...
Einstein was horrified by this random, unpredictable element in the basic laws and never fully accepted quantum mechanics. His feelings were expressed in his famous God-does-not-play-dice dictum. Most other scientists, however, accepted the validity of the new quantum laws because they showed excellent agreement with observations and because they seemed to explain a whole range of previously unaccounted-for phenomena. They are the basis of modern developments in chemistry, molecular biology and electronics and the foundation of the technology that has transformed the world in the past half-century...
...Champs Elysees, furtively looking at a small black-and-white photo and trying to spot the elusive Pierre, an Internet legend who tries to stay out of the spotlight. I surveyed the tables at Fouquet's, the fashionable outdoor cafe where we had agreed to meet. No dice. How hard can it be to pick out a geek entrepreneur who's worth more than $5 billion...
...pushes on. We'll be busy tonight rolling the dice--and tossing black balls--deciding magazine fate. And next week, once again, we wuss out. But this time it's your fault: You won't be here. Venerable Thanksgiving arrives once again, sending us home on the Delta Shuttle. Need turkey-stuffing tips? See "How To: Stuff a Turkey" (page eight). In our hearts will be those left to fend for themselves. We apologize that FM listings (starting page 16) end on Wednesday, just when stranded students might start looking beyond...
...speck in a universe whose extent is beyond our capacity to fathom, the unprecedented growth of human power has correspondingly created an imperative for humility. It is no accident that during a life of incomparable scientific achievement, Einstein often said, "God does not play dice with the universe...
