...only flaw in programming was the dull Bach Cantata No. 51. Not even a magnificent trumpet obbligato part could redeem the initial aria. Joan Heller, the soprano soloist,' has a beautiful voice remarkable for its evenness. Her diction was good and one could only wish for more variation in dynamics. It was a mistake to use a harpsichord against the full string body: Gerald Moshell pushed the instrument as much as possible and all it produced was a distracting non-tonal jangle. With smaller forces, though, it was quite adequate; and the continuo playing included some appropriate ritards...

...slow, legato music, Sills has a superior sense of rhythm and clean attack to keep things moving; Sutherland's more flaccid beat and her style of gliding from note to note often turn song into somnolence. Sills' diction in English, French and Italian is superb; Sutherland's vocal placement produces mushy diction in any language, but makes possible an even more seamless beauty of tone than is available to Sills...

...specter of a generation of young Americans coming home to seed ad- diction across the U.S. prompted a nationwide outcry and fast White House response. President Nixon created a Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention, and named a leading expert to head it: Dr. Jerome Jaffe, then director of the drug abuse program of the Illinois department of mental health. One of Jaffe's first measures was to install urinalysis equipment in Viet Nam to screen all returning G.I.s for traces of drugs. Now in its seventh week, the testing has produced remarkably consistent, and lower than expected...

...personal destiny. A person who had had a less sophisticated philosophical exposure might have couched this notion into convinced mutterings about the will of God or the whims of Lady Luck-7, 11, or the Second Coming. King, however, spoke of being tracked down by the Zeitgeist, and his diction was a part of his appeal to the white media. His rhetoric, "the soft Georgia cadence" of his voice, and the non-violence of his actions were the stuff of which television specials are made. Entertaining without being threatening...

...role of Tom Rakewell, the protagonist of the piece, Frank Hoffmeister is competent but not brilliant. His voice is strong and far-reaching, but his diction is often poor, and especially in the first act, the conductor has had him sing much too slowly. Ernest Triplett as Nick Shadow, Rakewell's servant, dominates the production, with both a good voice and an understanding of his role that makes him also a strong actor. Eunice Alberts as Baha, the bearded lady, is a fine comic heroine, with a rich vibrato that nicely complements her outlandishly ornate costume. Irene Elvin as Anne...
