...film revolves around Julie, played excellently by the lovely Juliette Binoche, who finds herself alone after her husband and daughter die in a tragic car crash. Her husband Patrice (Hugues Quester), a world famous composer, was in the midst of writing a concerto celebrating the unification of Europe when he was killed. A reporter covering Patrice's death mentions the rumor that it is actually Julie who composed her husband's works. After the tragedy, Julie attempts to retreat from society, moving to a seedy section of Paris. She sells most of her material belongings, using the money to provide...

Unfortunately, the film takes a wrong turn halfway through. The man slated to die for the cameras insists that he's innocent, and Jessica starts doing a little detective work. The movie at this point shifts from cautionary satire to routine whodunit, and the basic moral issue is made simplistic. The question becomes not the ethics of televising an execution but the ethics of televising the execution of someone who may not be guilty. Even the kids in Saved by the Bell know the answer to that...
...aside from the fact that they are jerks -- do men get angry? Does it have something to do with the fact that they die seven years earlier than women do, with rates of heart disease, ulcers, suicide, alcoholism and other stress diseases considerably higher than those of women? Are they angry because something in their conditioned or instinctive social roles as men revs them up in order to expose them to the worst dangers, like dying in war, like being killed in the line of duty as policemen and fire fighters, or otherwise doing the dirty, dangerous work...
