...glad to say that it is equally the tradition of all of our leading American colleges. The American college man is today ready, as he has been ready for generations in the past and as he will be ready for centuries to come, to fight and if necessary to die to protect the institutions of his country from the violent attack of a foreign enemy...

...great misfortune that this same class of men; educated and supported in the United States and who owe so much to their country, appear unwilling to take the slightest interest in preserving during the times of peace those institutions in the defense of which they are ready to die in times of war. This attitude of a very large proportion of the men and women of this country who are by tradition and education fitted to take a broad-minded and patriotic point of view makes easier the work of the demagogue appealing to prejudice and ignorance. Nine out-often...

Science certainly does change life! Heretofore one was reasonably certain that "when the brains were out the man would die", but now even this assurance is taken from us. Our enemies may live forever, and the one we kill today will have a chance to kill us tomorrow. To be sure, it would be but a momentary triumph, however, for the second dead man could be promptly revived. ...strangeness of the plea, that the case has had to be continued. This leads one naturally to ask: what would happen if a man had his fingers crossed all the time, or perhaps his tongue in his cheek, or forgot to cross his heart and say, "Hope to die," after the ceremony? The whole situation is obviously ridiculous, but the point involved is important. Thousands of tax-payers have sworn to their income tax returns without raising their hands. Are their oaths to be repudiated? Every day hundreds of would be motorists submit to the same stereotyped process, not bothering...

...great men have urged the moral iniquity of war, but there has been no effect. There was simply a worse war the next time. I believe that as long as men are not afraid to die none of the arguments will have much effect. We cannot simply abolish war without offering any solution, because war is an effective method of settling international disputes, and in war men will not count the cost. To get peace we must have justice. We will have justice only when we have law, and law only when we have a strong government behind its enforcement...
