...role in bailing out troubled economies. But it prefers not to foot the enormous bill alone or impose diktats from Washington. Many of the suggestions the IMF makes to borrowers, often in close consultation with the Treasury, are sound. But few of the nations are in any shape to digest, implement and enforce the Wizard of Oz transformations the institution wants. The fund needs to abandon its attempt to enforce deep structural reforms and focus instead on resuscitating these economies, particularly by helping them pay off their crippling short-term debt and managing their sliding currencies...
...similar leap of illogic assumes that because women in the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Sweden consume lots of milk and also suffer high rates of breast cancer, the former must cause the latter. Another clunker is Cohen's claim that widespread lactose intolerance--the inability to digest dairy products--means milk is of little use as a source of calcium. In fact, many cases of lactose intolerance are mild and interfere only slightly with calcium uptake. Many people intolerant of milk can easily digest yogurt. Cancer research--today's media hysteria over newer technologies notwithstanding--has always made strides in a slow and deliberate manner. Lopez Jr., a professor of Buddhist and Tibetan studies and author of an important new book, Prisoners of ShangriLa: Tibetan Buddhism and the West, says the fracas will help Americans realize they "have a bowdlerized version of Tibetan Buddhism." Editor Tworkov goes further. "This allows us as Westerners to ask, How do we bring this tradition into our society and our lives, and what is best left behind in Tibet...
...board of directors of Reader's Digest [BUSINESS, March 2] knows Wall Street wants action. That is why it acted decisively last August, when it determined that the best way to restore shareholder value was to change management, revitalize the company and position it for future growth. The board determined that George Grune was singularly well qualified to return as CEO, get the company refocused and lead a turnaround while the search for his successor progressed. People who understand publishing and direct-mail marketing know it is a business with a long lead time, not one for those who insist...
