...efficiency retrofits, all designed to save or create 3 million to 4 million jobs by the end of 2010. Obama has said speed is his top priority because the faster Washington injects cash into the financial bloodstream, the better it stands to help avert a multiyear slump with double-digit unemployment and deflation. But he also wants to use the stimulus to advance his long-term priorities: reducing energy use and carbon emissions, cutting middle-class taxes, upgrading neglected infrastructure, reining in health-care costs and eventually reducing the budget deficits that exploded under George W. Bush. Obama's goal...

...research, to be published Jan. 13 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a U.S. journal, scientists measured 44 male traders' second-to-fourth-digit-length ratio, which is otherwise known as 2D:4D and is an indicator of the effects of prenatal testosterone. The longer a trader's fourth finger relative to his index finger, and therefore the lower the 2D:4D ratio, the greater his prenatal exposure to the hormone. All of those taking part in the study carried out the same type of trading over the 20-month period studied and had the same access...

The higher the number, the more likely you are to pay back a loan, the thinking goes. A few years ago, Fair Isaac calculated that the average FICO score in the U.S. was 723. Fair Isaac hasn't gone back to recalculate the average recently...

...toddlers are especially susceptible to third-hand smoke, as they tend to be closer to contaminated surfaces, Winickoff explained. He added that because children weigh less, toxins that they inhale affect them more than they do adults. Winickoff and his colleagues collected their data through a national random-digit-dial telephone survey from September to November 2005. Their analysis of the gathered data revealed that 65.2 percent of nonsmokers said they thought that third-hand smoke harms children, compared 43.3 percent of smokers. Additionally, 95.4 percent of nonsmokers said they thought that secondhand smoke is damaging to children?...
