This plot seems more aptly suited for comedy and is inadequate to convey any political messages Wertmuller intended. Her material is simple and scant, for the dim-witted peasant has no ideological beliefs to articulate and a thick blanket of fear stifles his emotions. Except for one drunken outburst and a wild frenzy at the end, his eyes are expressionless, with pupils the size of pinpoints...

Prospects for any appreciable slowdown in inflation soon are dim. For all the public agonizing over cutting the present budget, there is little likelihood that federal spending will be reduced sharply enough to have a substantial impact on prices. Consumer prices in the first six months of this year shot up 12.6%, and they are likely to continue leaping at or close to a double-digit pace for the rest of the year. Farm prices are marching up again, and increases in wage settlements jumped from 7.6% in the first quarter to 10% in the second...

...third night for Jobriath and his lead-in act, Sweet Pie; the Performance Center is half full. The stage is set with lucite/chrome drums, a piano, and various microphones. Stage-rear--for no apparant reason at all--stand three plaster choir boys, cherubic and smiling. The lights 'dim, and a body walks on. It's a man dressed in a morning coat, sandles, sunglasses, hat, and G-string. Period. Sweet Pie holds up an "Ike/Nixon '54" button: "This just shows there were things queerer than me a long time...

...mind mending. Despite all the patent disapproval, though, the operation still seems feasible, the only alternative to Benson's previous condition. The unresolved conflict lends the film a rather archaic tone, like those old horror movies that ended in the smoldering ashes of some laboratory, where a dim but wise policeman would shake his head and say, "Man wasn't ready for such knowledge...
