Those who probably took the dimmest view of the trip were Czechoslovakia's Communist Party officials. Under their heavy hands, the Prague Spring of 1968 quickly gave way to sullen winter as the country became one of the most rigidly orthodox in the East bloc. Party Leader Gustav Husak, 74, installed by former Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnev as Dubcek's replacement, has symbolized the backward-looking government's unimaginative face...
...replace it with a minimalist Government that would do little more than keep law-and-order. Capitalism, freed of wasteful spending schemes and pepped up by tax cuts, would go on to produce prosperity for all. But his colleagues, up to and including the President, had only the dimmest idea of what it was they were supposed to be doing. They would never let Stockman fashion a program that would actually produce those results...
...Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and filed as a candidate in the Feb. 7 presidential election. On Wednesday, Corazon ("Cory") Aquino, 52, did the same thing. Next March, as Halley's speeds toward its closest approach to earth, it will be greeted by five diminutive, instrument-crammed space probes, two launched by Japan, two by the Soviet Union and one by the eleven nations of the European Space...
...true and terrible image. Cat People is clearly the work of a solemn literalist (and a man with a taste for perverse ritual), not that of a cynic or a sensationalist. But motive makes small difference in the end result. The film best serves the values of the dimmest lurker in the deepest shadows of the grind house: it has lots of nudity, plenty of gross-out guts and gore, two or three scares-and it makes no sense whatsoever. Anyone grownup enough to gain legal admission to the movie (it is rated R) will probably find himself either reduced...
