...Bush and his team of advisers - many of them members of the Reagan-Bush foreign policy brain trust - dismiss the significance of what Gore calls the "new strategic agenda" and take a dim view of the efficacy of U.S. interventions. Bush adheres closely to the doctrine articulated by Colin Powell, his favored future secretary of state: military interventions "need to be in our vital interest, the mission needs to be clear and the exit strategy obvious." Local conflicts are better left to regional powers. Bush considers the Clinton-Gore deployments in Haiti and Somalia ill-advised attempts at "nation building...
...this were satire, like Grosse Pointe or even Cybill, it might show her character as a bit self-absorbed. But since Bette is at most a loving spoof, the message, in "Bette's" words, is "I'm a goddess!" Even if you agree, you may wish she'd dim down the halo...
...cratered, they seem to preserve the primal character of the earth from which they're made. They're so uneven that you'd think they'd wobble if set on a table. (Eerie music starts playing in the background, the lights dim.) Something happened to the Trolls. I was determined to find out the answer...
...pilot is Marcy's uncle--and along with him, a layer of show-biz complexity and tension. But remaining is Sloane's Marcy/Tori, a brilliant comic creation down to her slightest tic, squeak and emotion-punctuating chest thrust. Marcy is really Pointe's most likable character, a good-hearted dim bulb made a nervous wreck by gossip and the stress of looking impossibly good. (A bulimia scene, also cut, was a cruel but apt picture of the flip side of TV's hot-body worship.) Star's using his past for laughs, yes, but not without heart...
