...Once booming businesses are resorting to desperate discounting to try to keep customers coming. In Hong Kong, 1,000 restaurants have joined together to offer dishes such as dim sum and roast pigeon for one Hong Kong dollar (about 13 cents). In Taipei, Taiwan's capital, fast-food chain KFC held a press conference last month to announce 50% discounts on every second meal ordered, only to have McDonald's employees interrupt by parading with signs promoting $2 lunch specials...
...summer of 2006, the top Marine intelligence officer in Iraq cabled his superiors at the Pentagon that the war was essentially lost in Anbar; his dire assessment soon surfaced on the front page of the Washington Post. "The prospects for securing that country's western Anbar province are dim," the newspaper said, summarizing the report. "The moment there is cause for optimism, I think you'll see the whole thing turning around," says Rao. For a CEO with big plans, recovery can't come quickly enough...
...wonderful, nuanced performances, charming creative vision, and a healthy dose of lighthearted fun.Tolchinsky (Nate Johnson) must educate Sophia Zubritsky (Jamianne Devlin) in 24 hours or risk falling victim to the village’s curse of stupidity. Unfortunately for Tolchinsky, he falls in love with the beautiful, but extremely dim-witted, Sophia. The lack of chemistry between Johnson and Devlin makes the asinine love story feel even more implausible than originally written, but the individual performances of the two actors easily compensate for this weakness. Johnson is especially delightful, playing Tolchinsky with an endearing earnestness, a wry sense of humor...
