Back went the tanks for more infantry and all day the assault continued. When night fell the artillery took up the battle again and the Finns could not sleep in the din...
Produced by Pandro S. Berman (Gunga Din, Michael Strogoff), the picture has big milling mobs, the Cathedral of Notre Dame (with close-ups of Gothic sculpture), some of the year's choicest bits of sadism (a flogging, a racking, an unsuccessful hanging), a pitched battle on the cathedral steps, and darkly witching Maureen O'Hara, last seen in a den of cut throats in Jamaica Inn, here seen in a den of cutthroats in medieval Paris...
Irwin Hoffman's brothers are mining engineers. Irwin Hoffman himself is a solid, soft-voiced artist who goes down a mine shaft almost as often as they do. In this infernal din set up by screaming sirens, barking anti-aircraft guns and the roar of bursting bombs I can't take my mind off the shivering of the wall of this ancient hotel. If it holds together until I can get this off, then I will believe in miracles...
