Bishop Ablewhite had, according to the Tribune, discovered shortages in diocesan funds soon after his consecration in 1930. One fund, which had shrunk from $40,000 to $30,000 was in the bishop's discretion to invest as he liked, and use for good works of any kind. In an attempt to recoup the losses, the bishop became involved with a promoter, one Harry S. Lyons, who called himself a onetime Navy captain. For a time Lyons made money for Bishop Ablewhite, and during these palmy days the two, sometimes with their wives, frequented Chicago nightspots. Finally, said...

Last fortnight, looking far from haggard, 180-lb. Churchman Noe once more mounted a Memphis pulpit. More than 100 Memphis citizens, some of them non-Episcopalians, had petitioned the Tennessee Diocesan Convention for permission to form a new parish, to be named St. James'. Permission granted, the parish invited popular Mr. Noe to be its rector. Pending the raising of money to build a church, Mr. Noe's flock planned to meet wherever they could hire or borrow a hall. In his first sermon, preached in a synagogue, Rector Noe promised "the greatest crusade for Christ ever known...

Brooklyn. Last fortnight the Jewish Examiner nominated for "Jew-Baiter No. 1" Dr. Patrick Scanlan, managing editor of the Brooklyn Tablet, Catholic diocesan organ whose letter columns have lately been full of discussions of "Jewish Bolshevism." Dr. Scanlan has particularly incurred Jewish displeasure by recommending that Dr. Albert Einstein be sent back to Germany, "where persecution might again impress him with its heinousness"-because Dr. Einstein joined Princeton professors in an appeal for lifting the arms embargo on Spain...

Thrice during the past fortnight. New York's bantam Mayor Fiorello Henry LaGuardia addressed himself to Protestants on religious matters. As a guest of the annual Episcopal diocesan convention the Mayor, an Episcopalian, renewed his appeal for $1,000,000 for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (collected to date: $283,000). To Presbyterians celebrating the 200th anniversary of the New York Presbytery he said: "We could use some more of you; we might even be glad to make some exchange of some others, for you carry a weight in the social services of this city...

...Anglican archbishops, eleven bishops and representatives of Nonconformist churches (Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregationalist, Quaker), by which reunion is to be attempted between the Church of England and the Free Churches, whose total membership is 7,000,000. The plan contemplates a church governed by a general assembly, bishops, diocesan synods and congregational councils, new bishops to be chosen from the Free Churches on the basis of their membership. Within this church there would be great freedom of doctrine and worship, but Anglicans would be asked to insist no longer on the sign of the cross at baptism, the wearing...
