...years, however, City College and the 19 other institutions that make up the tuition-free City University of New York (CUNY) have found it increasingly difficult to keep up their standards. Reason: a 1969 ruling that opened the doors of the university to any student holding a high-school diploma from New York City's school system, which graduates many functional illiterates. Result: CUNY was swamped with students who were ill-prepared even by the most generous standards to do college-level work. ...same thing: "I'll take my chances with the poisoned water, thank you." And what can you or I say? There are excellent illusions of power out there, and people really think they will get the power to change things. All they have to do is take their Harvard diploma and ask for it. And when they get told no, they still have their career, and their security, and the small reassurance that "things will get better as soon as the economy gets back on the upswing." Meanwhile back in the ghetto...
...sixties are dead. It's hard to speak of the community without sounding cliche. But my skin is still black. and, last I heard, the black community is still out there struggling. And though I haven't seen one, I don't think I can feed my Harvard diploma to any starving children...
Harvard graduates have disproportionately large contingents in the group that has finally gone to Oxford--last year nearly a sixth of the finalists came from Harvard. But even a Harvard diploma won't assure the scholarship--in fact, nothing will. So much depends on the competition you face, on the quality of your recommendations, and simply on the mood of your interviewers if you make it that far, that even the most impressive-looking resume may not help when you apply. But if you decide to try for a Rhodes when you graduate, well, good luck...
