...Jeane Kirkpatrick had been the guest of honor at a dinner hosted by Argentine Ambassador Takacs, an extraordinary accident of timing by the Argentines, if it was an accident. With Kirkpatrick at the function was Deputy Secretary of State Walter J. Stoessel, the highest-ranking U.S. career diplomat. Trying to explain the embarrassment, the State Department said only that the affair had been scheduled long before the invasion. British Ambassador Henderson noted the attendance of Kirkpatrick and Stoessel at the dinner and declared sarcastically: "We are not thrilled...

...needed has been an uphill battle. In November, the State Department was short volunteers to serve in the embassy in Iraq and was threatening to "direct" - diplo-speak for "order" - 48 foreign service officers to Iraq. At a town hall meeting to discuss the staffing gap, one 46-year diplomat described a posting in Iraq as "a potential death sentence." Those of us who oppose a de facto grant of immunity...

...current Administration and that the next President, whoever that poor soul may be, will have an extraordinary amount of cleaning up to do. I find it amazing that the Secretary is able to convey her feelings without rancor, hostility or bitterness. That's the mark of a true diplomat. I did not realize at the time how wonderful it was to have a prudent, wise, cautious, intelligent individual like her in office. The cowboys and cowgirls who took over demonstrated how quickly they could squander our nation's prestige in the world. Oren M. Spiegler, UPPER SAINT CLAIR...
