Texas, as everybody knows, thrives on super-scale. So naturally, the art season in Houston started off with two handsome shows dedicated to four maximal creators. At the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Director James Johnson Sweeney has a mammoth retrospective of the works of Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis, 44, whose canvases have been getting so large that he is building a new studio in California in which to paint them. And Houston's University of St. Thomas Art Gallery put on view 147 designs by three farsighted 18th century French architects, one of whom envisioned a gargantuan stadium...
...present production is a model of casting. Anne Bancroft's congealed contempt, George Scott's rasping arrogance, Margaret Leighton's wounded bird cries-all these file on the nerves as Director Mike Nichols expertly dovetails scenes of explosive malignance. For the first time, the Beaumont Theater's open stage does not seem to be sprawling off into infinity, as Howard Bay's set and lighting define the Hubbard living room like the white, spare square of a prize ring...
Last week, acting as producer, director, researcher, writer and narrator, Saarinen took her NBC camera team to Concord, Mass., to make a Today-show film on the town's 19th century authors. After poring over encyclopaedias, biographies and the writings of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott, she spent one afternoon tramping around the countryside, across the graveyards and through the centuries-old houses. Then she retreated to her hotel room to write her script and fill the margins with meticulous directions for the cameraman...
B.M.C., which claims that the Japanese cars are poorly trimmed and underpowered, has fought Honda's efforts to establish a dealership network. Says Lester Suffield, B.M.C.'s deputy managing director in charge of sales: "Of course we are getting tough. It has taken us 50 years to build up our sales network, and we don't intend to give one inch on this vital issue." Especially grating is the fact that the little Japanese cars coming into Britain pay a 22% duty, while mini-size cars entering Japan...
Unfortunately, there is nothing royal about Camelot's carious screen version. It has been brought crunchingly down to earth by the churlish touch of Director Joshua Logan. To be sure, the film is a re-creation of the triangled plot involving King Arthur (Richard Harris), Queen Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave) and Lancelot (Franco Nero), the interloper-knight who gives his rivals at the Round Table their joust desserts, thereby arousing the lady's passions. The King ignores their affair until the appearance of his bastard son Mordred (David Hemmings), who sunders the kingdom with slander and rumor...
