...according to another federal study, the number of Americans using crack cocaine at least once a week increased by one- third during that period, from under 650,000 to more than 860,000. "The poor people in the ghetto aren't buying all that cocaine," says William Smith, clinical director of California's Phoenix House. "This is a plague that knows no class or racial boundaries...
Psychologists say upwardly mobile Americans who turn to crack share personality traits that may make them vulnerable to the drug's siren call. Dr. Jeffrey Rosecan, director of the Cocaine Abuse Treatment Program at Manhattan's Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, sketches a profile of the typical crack user: a man in his 30s or 40s, single or divorced, with a high- pressure job, little inner peace and a history of moderate drug use and heavy drinking. "They're extremists, hard drivers, workaholics," says Rosecan. "With an all-or-nothing personality and a history of drug experimentation...
...down and mutilated. A basketball team is massacred. A female rebel is raped by a vigilante commandant; when the commandant is killed, his lieutenant carves open the dead man's chest and eats his flesh. Close and Woods, more familiar playing high-powered candidates for psychosis, are laser-precise as the Spectors. They work hard at appearing comfortable in roles without edges. But the Spectors, who set the film's agenda, cede sympathy to Lucy, as the well-to-do in movies inevitably do to the poor-but-spunky...
...lunch that day, all she could think about (and all Richard Cohen, the legal director of the center, could recall her talking about) was water. On the flight down, she was particularly struck by a line from Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, the line, partly borrowed from the Bible, that said, "We will not be satisfied until 'justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.' " It occurred to her that water would be an ideal element for a hot climate, that its calm, soothing quality and quiet, constant sound would be perfect...
