...Bush Administration's insistence that military action remains an option has alarmed some allies, but differences are evident on the diplomatic front, as well. Germany's new conservative Chancellor, with the support of Britain, has repeatedly urged the Bush Administration to hold direct talks with Iran, warning that there won't be a diplomatic solution unless the two key protagonists discuss their differences. "It's amazing that when we're in a bilateral position, or kind of just negotiating one on one, somehow the world ends up turning the tables on us," President Bush answered on April 10 in answer...

As it stands, the African Union (AU) force cannot intervene or raid Janjaweed camps, as rules of engagement forbid any offensive action.Something more must be done. The U.S.’s first step should be to push for a Security Council resolution that enables UN peacekeepers to directly intervene in Sudan. Other proposed preconditions for receiving UC money are less palatable. For example, it has been suggested that only Houses that allow direct, House-wide elections of HoCo board members should receive the UC funds. Such a condition would represent unwarranted meddling into the internal business of the Houses. There is room for reasonable disagreement on the issue of how to elect HoCo leaders. It can be argued that only people who have attended HoCo meetings know who is capable of leading the group. On the other hand, direct House-wide elections have an instinctive democratic appeal. In any case...
