Those odds got a lot sharper during her burnt-earth campaign to acquire Compaq in 2002. To Fiorina, combining the two plodding PC businesses was the only way to improve profitability and take on the low-cost, direct-sales monster called Dell. To critics, merging two lousy operations had limited appeal. Director Walter Hewlett, a Stanford music professor and son of the co-founder, led a public proxy fight against the deal. Although Fiorina prevailed, the cost was high. Within months, Compaq CEO Michael Capellas, who was supposed to run the computer division, was out the door. Others followed...

...those still planning their winter vacations. Locals in Phuket, from hawkers to hotel managers, say tourists, spooked by the thought of a vacation in a disaster zone, have avoided the holiday mecca. Beaches crowded before Christmas with several thousand sun worshippers?and whose euros and dollars and renminbi directly or indirectly support 70% of the local population?now play host to just a few hundred. A nuclear-armed North Korea means that President Bush's multilateral strategy for preventing Pyongyang from acquiring nukes has failed just as dramatically as Clinton's policy of direct engagement did a decade ago. It means that even when they are united, Beijing, Moscow, Tokyo, Seoul and Washington haven't found the right combination of levers to halt nuclear proliferation by a rogue state. And it probably means that even if the U.S. and its allies can coax Pyongyang back into negotiations...

...that country as being restrained," which would suggest that if it does, in fact, have nuclear weapons and has repeatedly used blackmail and brinkmanship as instruments of foreign policy, then trying to slowly starve it to death may not the most rational course of action. And initiating a direct military confrontation remains almost unthinkable, not only because analysts estimate it could cost up to one million lives but also because the government of South Korea would be adamantly opposed...
