Case quickly countered with his own new deal, to have Hughes Electronics' DirecTV offer AOL via satellite to its 7 million customers. The resulting product will be called AOL TV. Microsoft, of course, is still pushing its own interactive television service, Web TV. And here too the battle lines are drawn...
...three days before the big game, I went to work trying to get a high-definition signal. I got none. No Miami stations have started broadcasting in HD yet and the cable-TV industry hasn't even settled on a standard. My satellite dish wasn't any help, either. DirecTV shows one channel of HDTV, but nobody sells a decoder that can tune it in. Aaargh...
...Lolita (Aug. 2), the Discovery Channel's Shark Week (Aug. 9-16) and the Learning Channel's latest swimsuit documentary, Beauty and the Beach (July 11). The best viewing is hiding on obscure cable channels. Finding them can require not only keen summer-surfing skills but sometimes a DirecTV satellite. But hey, it's either that or spending another Monday night watching Caroline misplace a family heirloom, right after that visiting-mom episode. The choice is yours...
