Under the growing pressure of subterranean steam against the mountain's molten core, the volcano's cap could eventually blow out entirely. Montserrat, not much more than a slender arc of farm and beach land surrounding the volcano, could virtually disappear. More likely, the mountain may keep on belching for months or years, slowly smothering the little island. Already it is a paradise lost for its citizens as fewer than 4,000 cling to their homeland. "If everyone leaves," says Radio Montserrat general manager Rose Willock, who lost her home a month ago, "Montserrat will become just another island that...

...covered Alaska's commercial fisheries for print and broadcast media for nearly a decade, I am troubled by your vivid portrayal of some of the favorite fish "entrees" that could soon disappear. In Alaska we have more salmon than we know what to do with. Annual statewide salmon catches usually hover at around 200 million fish. ...spotted owl will probably hang in there too. The Mac remains the most usable, intuitive operating system around (this writer still loyally totes his ultra-light Powerbook Duo on any trip that's going to strand him overnight within crouching distance of a phone jack), and it will never disappear entirely. As long as there are wild-eyed digital artists and idealistic undergrads whose Macs mean to them what Abbey Road did to their parents, there will be a place--albeit a small one--for the company from Cupertino, Calif. Still, it must be a comedown for Jobs...

...Holland, director of the shark lab, suggested a more judicious approach: first figure out how the sharks actually behave. If they keep to a small territory, a locally targeted eradication program could reduce the danger. But if they have no territorial allegiance, an aggressive animal might kill and disappear, never to return, and slaughtering the sharks that remained might not help...
