...abraded by handling, lost by corrosion and reworking, covered by soil or ashes, sunk in shipwrecks or buried in graves at the rate of about 2% a year. Such ''extreme volatility," says Patterson, means that if silver production stops, a nation's entire supply can disappear in about a century. Production in the silver mines of Rome began to decline about A.D. 200. By then, they were so deep that Roman engineers had no way of clearing them of water. Such general cultural oversight is mirrored by a lack of understanding in academic and administrative circles. Lerner's article, "Respectable Bigotry", shows how academic liberals serenely espouse a double standard; empathizing with blacks and proud of their own lack of racism, their understanding seems to disappear as they sneer at police and factory workers as 'fascist pigs' and 'ethnics'. The younger Kaplan had been convicted in 1962 for the Mexico City murder of his New York business partner, Louis Vidal Jr. Kaplan claimed at the trial that Vidal, who had been involved in narcotics and gunrunning, had constructed an elaborate plot to disappear. The murder victim, Kaplan maintained, was not even Vidal, and indeed, serious doubts were raised about the body's identity. When Kaplan took it on the lam, he was accompanied by Carlos Antonio Contreras Castro, a Venezuelan counterfeiter...
