Britten's score is particularly responsive to the emotions that run through the core of James' story. We not only hear Miss Jessel verbally bemoaning her fate, but also the heavy constant tone of suffering in the music. Even more ambiguous feelings come through, such as the rather naive disbelief that characterizes the housekeeper Mrs Grose (Nan Hughes). Hughes portrays Mrs. Grose as a harried, trusting woman whose gentle nature cannot comprehend the horror that surrounds her. PART OF THE PROBLEM with the movie is that it is fantastically realistic. After all suspension of disbelief can last just so long. Is it really possible that eight penniless teenagers can clean, paint, and redecorate, let alone locate, an apartment in New York within hours of arriving in the city? That 25% hike is nearly six times as great as the modest increase in the Consumer...

"Six years," the parking valet says in disbelief, "no one stays married that long." But it was not fair in Yuppiedom. While they sup, a young man in a dark van pulls up in front of their house on San Francisco Bay, deftly enters, and makes off with a horde of booty which includes a mysterious padlocked...
