...more and more people have piled into the business, their margins have come down. After paying his "middleman" for a new supply of DVDs about once every two weeks - he has about 1000 titles for sale at any one time - Zhou says he earns less than one RMB per disc sold. "It's definitely a volume business," he says wearily. When I press him on where his middleman gets his product - that is, who's actually making these pirated DVDs - Zhou smiles and plays dumb. He knows I'm a journalist and there are things he's not going...

...Granted, quality is sometimes an issue (though the pirated 24 disc was perfect.) A lot of the DVDs available are so-called "coat movies," the kind of low-rent pirating famously (and hilariously) depicted in an episode of Seinfeld in which Kramer agrees to smuggle a hand-held camera into a theater in order to illegally tape a movie. In a coat movie you can literally hear people coughing and half the time someone will stand up right in front of the camera. And sometimes language is an issue. I had to buy three copies of Casino Royale until...

...their emotional breadth. In retrospect, it’s easier to see LCD’s first release for what it was: a little lazy and a bit too cute. The double-album format was an excuse to reissue Murphy’s DFA singles on the second disc, and the first frontloaded the fun, partying a bit too hearty with the opening cuts. Any attempts at sentiment felt artificial. What a difference two years have made. Murphy’s always known how to build a song, but here, every track climbs slowly to its inevitable peak. When...

...jump in, which could both legitimize the category and add a killer competitor. Now that CEO Steve Jobs has modified the Mac operating system for the iPhone, he could use that slimmed-down version for other mobile devices. Apple could employ flash memory instead of a standard hard disc, extending a mini Mac's battery life and allowing it to start up quickly, like a phone. A Jobs subnotebook would likely be bigger than FlipStart's but smaller than a laptop. Apple would have a distinct software advantage, given its focus on nongeeks...

...times like these. On the whole, !!! is sexy, juvenile, and silly, particularly in “Must be the Moon,” the catchiest song in the album. The bass and the electric rolls, the astro-guitar and galactic bump: all these elements appear elsewhere on the disc, but here they’re wired into a seamless industrial complex of a song. At other times, as in “Heart of Hearts” (which, unfortunately, is the single), the looping bass thump and electric guitar become tiring and fairly forgettable. The fairly forgettable fills most...
