...collapse of time. When an Elvis-impersonator bursts upon the founding fathers, we see the most realistic instance of time-space confuscation. "Elvis" escorts a dorky librarian to the future, where his mission is to prevent a militaristic presidential candidate from winning and fulfilling his alliance with a disco-dancing tele-evangelist by outlawing rock'n roll. They do so by transforming a stuttering barber-woman into the Cinderella candidate destined for victory. What follows is a synchronic allegory of post-revolutionary American history only thinly disguised as an innovative commentary on gender roles in the 90s. Each character represents...
...female companion pays our cover charge of seven dollars each; we take small, red tickets and ascend the staircase to the top Kong. "I gave him a 20 and he gave me back 13!" she whispers to me. We come upon a dance club pulsing to hip-hop beats; disco lights flash and swirl spastically. In the corner above the packed dance floor stands the deejay booth ornamented by two gilt Chinese dragons. The mythical beasts seem to stare at us knowingly, disapproving of such trespass. Suddenly, my friend turns to me and shouts above the music, "Where...
...Prince remake (thankfully), but another release in the French disco house genre that entered the global consciousness last year with the enormous success of Stardust, Daft Punk, and Bob Sinclar. Cassius comprises ace French producers Boombass and Philippe Zdar, and their experience as DJs (Paris's Respect is Burning; London's Basement Jaxx) and musicians (Motorbass and La Funk Mob) shows. The album's delectable pastiche of 4/4 beats, cut-up vocals and instruments, and funk-tinged deep bass (even the Foxy Brown theme gets sampled) creates some of the most massive tunes to hit the dancefloor, including the storming...
After a lengthy intermission, The Cardigans began their set with a powerful rendition of "Marvel Hill," a bittersweet song about ambivalence from Gran Turismo. The sound of the new album is a welcome change from their frothy pop days. Gone are the disco guitars of 1996's First Band on the Moon and instead replaced with buzzing drones and techno beats. These qualities come out especially well in the rhythmically complex "Erase/Rewind" and the lackadaisical, sweet melody line of "Junk of the Hearts." The arrangements are sparser, the rhythms more urgent; The Cardigans' music isn't especially memorable, but like...
...years, it has survived the Vietnam War, disco, Cindy Lauper and wretched Boston winters. But this past December, time stopped in Harvard Square. The mechanical controller for the digital clock above Cambridge Savings Bank "melted," according to Nelson Goddard, senior vice president of administration for the bank...
