Considering Del Toro’s deft exposition of the backstory, deepening Hellboy’s craggy recesses is probably unnecessary; but, in an era when films are shot with the DVD in mind, necessity takes a back-seat to the three disc special edition, complete with collector’s booklet of arcane diagrams and vulgar Latin. Character bios, conceptual art and hours of behind-the-scenes commentary abound; one feature even allows the viewer to jump from the movie into comic book expositions at crucial moments. The trigger-happy viewer will quickly dissolve into Hellboy nerd-dom, muttering...
...offhand cultural awareness and deadpan irony have once again become a theme on Cake’s new album, Pressure Chief, the fifth of their career. In concert at the Orpheum October 7th, McCrea debuted “No Phone,” the second track off the new disc, to an audience filled with adoration for his trademark mordant social rants. “No Phone,” along with various other tracks off the new album, denounce technology and urban culture with a blander-than-usual strain of Cake’s signature social criticism. Al-Qaeda was thought to be behind the bombing of three Egyptian tourist sites popular with Israelis. While the White House welcomed the historic image of Afghans...
...should boost LCD TV sales. (Traditional TVs can show HDTV programming, but sometimes not as crisply as LCD TVs, which are almost all HDTV ready in larger sizes.) In the not-too-distant future, flat TVs will be hooked up to PCs, which will record movies on a hard-disc drive. And then there's the get-the-neighbors-talking factor. Ritch Wheeler, 33, a sales manager for DaimlerChrysler from Denton, Texas, recently bought a 42-in. plasma TV on the Internet from Gateway for $3,000 and has got an instant popularity boost. "Everybody who walks into the house...
