Bert Lance is back in Georgia and no longer a threat to the republic, so it should be possible to discuss more coolly how the press treated him. The press has already delivered its own verdict, conceding only that maybe there were a few excesses on its part (TIME, Sept. 19). But since Lance turned out to be guilty of shoddy banking practices, newshounds were not barking up the wrong tree, were they?
