...been a registered Republican since I became old enough to vote for Mr. Hoover against Al Smith in 1928. This last election caused my feelings to run the course from interest to astonishment to disgust; but it was not until yesterday that they reached real anger. My absolute disgust for the Republican campaign sent me running to the polls to vote with pride for President Roosevelt...

Exploiting the present world tragedy, Hollywood has manufactured a series of war pictures that makes soldiers overseas practically retch, and causes even entertainment-hungry troops to file out of movies before a picture ends, expressing their disgust and scorn with jeers and boos and very much-to-the-point one-word descriptions. They have just "seen themselves" portrayed on the screen a la Hollywood's idiotic hoopla. Some marcelled hero with rouged lips and a do-or-die voice has just charged a Jap battalion with six grenades clenched between his Pep-sodent-perfect molars, a Tommy...

Pigeon-toed Pancho of the two-handed drive delighted the crowd with audible pep talks to himself in Spanish, with dramatic gestures of disgust when he flubbed a point. Nonetheless, a baby is almost invariably perfectly housebroken...

...spite of its surface absurdities and wild overwriting, Rome Hanks is a noteworthy book. The qualities which distinguish it, and which led reviewers to praise its author's vitality, are 1) an acute disgust with the oversimplifications and idealizations of most historical fiction, 2) a pounding, repetitious style which, in 363 pages, develops considerable force, and 3) a genuine mastery of hillbilly dialogue. Readers who note how well Author Pennell pictures his plain soldiers, and how successful he is when he is not melodramatic, may wonder why he felt compelled to overload his book with lurid details, hope...
