Those who read Harper's because of Kinsley will probably throw up their hands in disgust and join great Harper's writers like Wilfrid Sheed and David Owen in jumping ship. But the new Harper's is not hopeless or craven, just different. It's still witty and informative, and the counterman at Nini's Corner reports that it's selling very well. Upon attending the meeting, however, and listening Peter Sellars rave, my cautious optimism was replaced by skepticism and then disgust. Those in attendance were first treated to a cursory summation of the plans, and then an extended glorification of Sellars' past performances.
