Exploiting the present world tragedy, Hollywood has manufactured a series of war pictures that makes soldiers overseas practically retch, and causes even entertainment-hungry troops to file out of movies before a picture ends, expressing their disgust and scorn with jeers and boos and very much-to-the-point one-word descriptions. They have just "seen themselves" portrayed on the screen a la Hollywood's idiotic hoopla. Some marcelled hero with rouged lips and a do-or-die voice has just charged a Jap battalion with six grenades clenched between his Pep-sodent-perfect molars, a Tommy...
...toilet training begins at four months, and is likely to be the most painful experience of his life. He is held out over the balcony or road at frequent intervals. For every lapse, he is ferociously punished-by his mother's scoldings (in a tone of horror and disgust), by shaking, sometimes by beating. Training is made more difficult by the fact that Japanese babies are habitually overfed (which Gorer thinks may account for Japanese grownups' lack of interest in food and ability to get along on small rations). Nonetheless, a baby is almost invariably perfectly housebroken...

Readers who note how well Author Pennell pictures his plain soldiers, and how successful he is when he is not melodramatic, may wonder why he felt compelled to overload his book with lurid details, hope...

When we got to talking to him we found that his attitude was one of complete disgust with Jap marksmanship. He said, 'If that had been a marine he would have shot me right square through the forehead...
...Acid Poetess Dorothy Parker believed he had "done more kindness than anyone I have ever known." Novelist Edna Ferber called him a "New Jersey Nero who mistook his pinafore for a toga." Sometimes his most devoted admirers found his cantankerousness hard to bear. "I find you are beginning to disgust me, puss," he once snarled at a guest. "How about getting the hell out of here...
