...VANITY PRESS: Toby Young details his belly flop in the New York journalism pool in "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" (Da Capo; July 4). Kirkus enjoys the dish. "Kiss-and-tell memoir of Young's ill-fated stint as contributing editor at Vanity Fair magazine... This skewering of celebrity worship at the nation's leading 'upscale supermarket tabloid' bears a distinct resemblance to shooting fish in a barrel; nonetheless, Young's language is energetic and engaging, making one wish (along with his father, apparently) that he'd find a worthier subject. ...Euro 2000, they are aching to prove they are as good as the French. Portugal has a case. The midfield tandem of scary-fast Figo and cunning Rui Costa is as powerful a combo as any in the game. Although perfectly able to score themselves, each can also dish with pleasure to the team's true finishers Nuno Gomes and Pedro Pauleta. The dish did not need to be literally swimming in butter, but the morel mushrooms were also fresh and flavorful. In another entrée bright spot, the pork and garlic sausage player in the Blue Room’s mixed grill ($21 for the sausage and two tasty, if unexceptional, portions...
...strong flavors of Stilton and balsamic with sweet onion and buttery pastry is a great idea. But the theme here appeared to be “thick,” with the pastry shell too soft and doughy and the red onions chopped too large to allow the dish to really come together. The mahi-mahi cakes with yucca and mojo de ajo ($8) were the biggest shame of the evening. Their strange culinary fusion appears to be “Miami meets Idaho,” with most of the mahi-mahi cast aside for chunks of potato. Normally...
