While Big Dipper could be a lot tighter--the rhythm section nearly falls apart during "San Quentin"--Boo-Boo is a worthwhile debut. Nothing on this disk is as immediately startling as Volcano Suns' "White Elephant," but then again this EP is a lot easier to listen to than the Suns' All Night Lotus Party. For those who like musical roots mixed in with sonic radicalism, Boo-Boo by Big Dipper is Boston's next big thing...
...belied by the above catalogue, there is not a lot of stylistic unity on Invisible. The one constant on this disk is Hitchcock's bizarre sense of humor, which leads him to rhyme the word "spanner" with such unlikely choice as "banana" and "iguana." When the aim is scabrous, Hitchcock creates "Trash," a scathing put-down of the star-fucking mentality in rock and roll and an explicit tribute to Lou Reed's "Dirt." But at his most playful, he comes up with "Point It At Gran," a suggestion to a gun-toting assailant...

Although this Louisville quintet has existed since 1982 and released an eponymous debut in 1985, it is on skag heaven that Squirrelbait make their best claim to sovereignty. Basically, this disk features four-chord power rock played with an abandon utterly lacking in most AOR music. It doesn't matter what material Squirrelbait chooses--from an original composition sensitively entitled "Black Light Poster Child" to a cover of Phil Ochs' "Road Tape From California"-- every song on skag comes out rough and tumble...
...when the computer industry slumped in the early 1980s, the company nearly collapsed from the weight of its commitments. Control Data's distracted managers were neglecting the firm's core technologies, like data-storage devices, while competitors raced ahead. The company's worldwide share of the market for disk drives reportedly plunged from 55% in 1980 to about 20% in 1985. The computer maker feverishly began cleaning house in 1985, not long before its financial squeeze. The company proceeded to discard some 20 businesses that were too far removed from its basic field. The biggest divestiture came last October, when...
