...clothes drenched by the downpour that turned Comiskey Park into a quagmire, his spirits doused by the dismal sight of his favorites limping through their second game in a row, Chicago White Sox Fan Joseph Gorman was moved to rowdy wrath. He leaned over the visitors' dugout, took careful aim and treated Yankee Manager Casey Stengel to a faceful of beer. The response was expansive. "He wasn't cheap," said Casey of the attacker. "He hit me with a full cup." The feelings on both sides of the matter were plain. The White Sox were in the process...
From scare headlines and angry editorials, Britons generally learned last week what their doctors had known for months : the nation's vaccination program against poliomyelitis is a dismal flop. With this year's number of polio cases (2,700 so far) reported mounting rapidly toward what might well prove to be the highest figures ever, vaccinations were hopelessly behind schedule. There was no chance that the program could catch up unless it got a shot in the arm with massive imports of U.S. vaccine - and these the Ministry of Health flatly refused to consider...
...shows "as a pimply novice" with his boyhood idol, Actress Elliott. In 1935 Madge and Cyril, dubbed by Noel Coward "the singing Lunts," were married "with 3,000 people in the cathedral and 20,000 in the streets." Later in the U.S., Ritchard wasted his directorial skills on a dismal flop called Buy Me Blue Ribbons ("The reviews were simply blasting"), became identified as a periwigged fop in Restoration comedies ("That was my Mary Pickford period-all those long, blonde wigs...
Birdlime in a Dell. It sounds like dismal stuff, but from the first lines of this play the Irish language contrasts with modern stage English as a cage of songbirds contrasts with a yardful of hens, and the reader is quickly caught in a Grand McGuignol of fatalist humor. Like Koestler, rumpled, mountainous Author Behan, 34, knows prison bars from the inside; he was sentenced in his teens to an English reformatory for dropping I.R.A. explosives into London mailboxes, has spent in all eight years in prison for assorted violence on behalf of Irish freedom. His dialogue flourishes with...
Despite the serious overtones, the play is above all comedy, which is what evidently escaped the Tufts' players. The cast was unfortunately headed by Fred Blais, who, miscast as Knock, turned in a dismal performance. While maintaining the Doctor's mock-solemnity, he not only failed to imbue him with the necessary dynamism and authority, but utterly lacked Knock's resourcefulness, wit, and ability to manipulate people. His awkward use of medical instruments, moreover, was not calculated to convince the audience that he was more than a bungler, which Knock most emphatically...
