...surprise of many whites and dismay of his supporters, Barack Obama trailed Hillary Clinton among black Americans by a 40-point margin in a recent Washington Post-ABC poll. It is possible to read this as a positive development: black Americans have transcended racial politics and may now vote for the person they consider the better candidate, regardless of race. The sad truth, however, is that Obama is being rejected because many black Americans don't consider him one of their own and may even feel threatened by what he embodies...
Growing up in the Baptist-dominated wilds of western North Carolina, I usually watched book burnings with a mixture of perplexity and dismay. Now I understand them. Sometimes, books are so offensive they necessitate bonfires. Case in point: Mitch Albom’s new bestseller. “For One More Day” tells of what happens when the middle-aged Charley has the chance to have “the ‘one more day’ that so many wish they had with a lost loved one—a day to ask questions, seek forgiveness...

In December, Russia threatened...
Superficially at least, the Taser is the perfect weapon for dealing with dangerous scenarios such as riots. It purportedly does no permanent damage and yet completely immobilize its victims. This is how the public perceives them at least and, to our dismay, evidently many users of NLWs share the perception. In fact, however, no thorough medical review of their effects has been carried out, and since the weapon’s most extensive testing was conducted by the company that sells them, human rights groups have questioned the label "non-lethal." Yet even if Tasers pose no risk of death...
