In particular, she cites the recently successfully plea of Pope John Paul II to commute the death sentence of a Missouri criminal. Like Tobin, I appreciate the outcome of the papal gesture but do not believe that religious leaders should determine political policy by sole virtue of their sectarian positions...

He told a story about how he and Clinton had once survived a rough plane landing in Arkansas: "We jumped out and ran away unscathed ?- to the dismay of every budding politician in Arkansas." He recited constitutional history and discussed patriotism, and at one point almost began to cry. ...here I come dangerously close to becoming just one more plaintive voice in the cacophony of reading period dismay. Rather, we should all try to put our troubles in the back of our minds, and face life with--if not a smile and a wink--at least a silent stoicism. Towards that end, we need only look to the oft-neglected outside world for ever-present reminder that things could certainly be a whole lot worse...

...what makes me twitch and tremble is having to explain to everyone I know why I must be back in Cambridge on the fourth of January, and watching them gasp in shock and dismay upon hearing that I have yet to complete major portions of my work for the semester. In my opinion, the simple question "How long is your winter break?" is the worst one you can ask a Harvard student. Surely I am not alone in experiencing this painful ritual year after year...
